California IN BRIEF : BOLINAS : Election Aims for Change in Attitude

In an attempt to put a stop to what seems to have become a Bolinas tradition, an advisory ballot measure this week will ask residents of this picturesque hamlet in northern Marin County to stop yanking signs directing would-be visitors to the town. Apparently motivated by a desire to keep tourists to a minimum, residents have uprooted at least 36 signs along California 1 over the past two decades. “We’re all pretty tired of this nonsense,” said Louise Pepper, a Bolinas real estate agent. “It started in the late 1960s when a particular group decided that, since they got here, they didn’t want anybody else here. . . . If enough people are tired of this ridiculous attitude, I think (the measure) will pass,” Pepper said.
