VANCOUVER — Canada’s Coast Guard went on strike for higher wages today, throwing up picket lines on the East and West coasts.
The 2,200 unionized seamen, deckhands, stewards and cooks--who conduct sea rescues, go on customs and fishery patrols and work aboard government research vessels--said they will return only in emergencies. None were immediately reported.
Coast Guard spokesman Craig Dougans said the agency will “so the best we can, but you can expect some disruptions.”
