A fire that started in a deep-fat fryer forced the evacuation of a Thousand Oaks restaurant and caused $40,000 in damage, authorities said Sunday.
Ventura County fire dispatcher Vicki Crabtree said the blaze, which did not cause any injuries, was reported about 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the kitchen of the El Torito restaurant at 449 N. Moorpark Road. It was brought under control about half an hour later by 36 firefighters.
An automatic fire extinguisher in a heat hood over the fryer was activated but was unable to put out the blaze, which spread to the rest of the kitchen, Crabtree said.
