CHICAGO — Former Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine, the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress, was listed in good condition at a Chicago hospital today after undergoing treatment for chest pains.
The 91-year-old Republican, who left the Senate in 1972, was taken to Resurrection Medical Center last week from O’Hare Airport after becoming ill during a flight.
She was in the intensive care unit at the hospital but in improved condition, a spokeswoman said today.
Smith, who lives in Skowhegan, Me., served in the House from 1932 to 1948, when she was elected to the Senate.
