WORLD IN BRIEF : CAMBODIA : Rebels Stage Attacks to Consolidate Gains

About 5,000 guerrillas met strong resistance from government troops after launching major attacks in northwestern Cambodia in a bid to solidify recent gains, a senior official of the Khmer People’s National Liberation Front said. He claimed that the rebels killed 36 government troops and wounded 26 while suffering six killed and 36 wounded. He said the insurgents had been only 60% effective in trying to take the town of Svay Chek, their main objective. The guerrillas previously had reported mass defections and surrenders from the Phnom Penh army.
