Torrey Pines High was eliminated from the CIF Division I state girls’ volleyball playoffs Saturday, losing to unbeaten Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 15-6, 15-5, 15-10, at Redondo Union High in Redondo Beach.
The Falcons ended their season 23-5. Mira Costa (25-0), the No. 1-ranked team in the nation and the Southern Section 5-A champion, advanced to the semifinals to face Livermore Granada.
“We had a good season,” Torrey Pines Coach Jim Harrah said. “Our only losses were to the two top-seeded teams in the state tournament, Mira Costa and (San Diego Section Division I champion) Poway.”
Torrey Pines lost the first two games, but the Falcons rebounded to take a 9-5 lead in the third, led by a Jacey Hay service ace and a Bret Hensel-Annette Paul block of a Kristal Attwood spike. But then the Mustangs outscored Torrey Pines, 10-1, to clinch the match.
Jennifer Meredith led Torrey Pines with five kills.
