NATION IN BRIEF : ALASKA : Third Mate Won’t Be Charged in Oil Spill

Government prosecutors in the Exxon Valdez oil spill case will not file criminal charges against the third mate, Gregory Cousins, 39, of Tampa, Fla., who actually ran the ship aground. Instead, Cousins’ testimony will be used against others, his lawyer said in Anchorage. No charges have been brought yet in the federal criminal probe.
