Free agent Walt Terrell, a right-handed pitcher, agreed to a three-year, $3.6-million contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Terrell, expected to be the Pirates’ third starter behind John Smiley and Doug Drabek, was 15-10, 15-12 and 17-10 for the Detroit Tigers from 1985-87, but was 18-34 the last two seasons. He split the 1989 season between the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees, going 5-13 with the Padres and 6-5 with the Yankees.
