WASHINGTON — About 70 demonstrators were arrested today after they sat down on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House to protest what they called the government’s lack of leadership in the AIDS epidemic.
Those taking part in the civil disobedience were among about 200 people who attended a rally marking World AIDS Day.
“We’re here because we’re angry at our country and our Administration’s response to this epidemic,” said Urvashi Vaid of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
The demonstration came as President Bush was in Malta for a summit with Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev.
“Where are you, George?” asked Vaid, leading the crowd in Lafayette Park in a chant of “Where is George? Where is George?”
