Gambling Club Proposal Won’t Be Put on Ballot

The West Hollywood City Council on Monday voted against placing a referendum on the city’s 1990 ballot that would have allowed gambling on all legal card games at Cavendish West Hollywood, a private bridge and rummy club on Sunset Boulevard next to Beverly Hills.
Cavendish officials, who requested the referendum, maintained that the city could receive as much as $6 million in annual fees from the gambling club. Opponents complained of parking and traffic problems that could result from a nightly influx of gamblers. Others protested the “moral turpitude” they said the proposal would cause West Hollywood.
