Public Hearings Begin on Rail Line Routes

The first of two public hearings will be conducted in Canoga Park today on a recently released environmental report on alternative routes for an east-west San Fernando Valley rail line.
The environmental impact report, prepared for the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission, is to be used by the commission as a basis for selecting a route, possibly as soon as March.
Today’s hearing will be at 4 and 7 p.m. at Sutter Junior High School, 7330 Winnetka Ave.
On Sunday, the commission will again take testimony on the report. That session will be at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at North Hollywood High School, 5231 Colfax Ave.
The report contains design details and ridership projections for 10 alternatives along two routes: the Ventura Freeway, from Universal City to Warner Center, and a Southern Pacific rail right of way, which crosses the Valley from North Hollywood to Warner Center.
Both routes were studied as extensions of the downtown-to-North Hollywood Metro Rail subway and as light-rail lines, either at ground-level, in a shallow trench or a deep trench.
