Marshall football Coach George Chaump was named football coach at Navy.
Chaump, 53, who replaces Elliot Uzelac, had eight consecutive winning seasons at Marshall, where his record was 33-16-1. He is the first Navy coach without any previous ties to the Academy since Bill Elias, who coached from 1965-68.
Chaump served as an assistant at Ohio State for 11 years under Woody Hayes and before becoming the quarterback coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976. He later coached at Indiana (Pa.) University.
Gene Stallings, fired as coach of the Phoenix Cardinals in mid-season, coach who was also considered for the Navy job coaching position, but withdrew his name after visiting the campus on Saturday. Stallings said he is interested in the coaching vacancy at Alabama.
