Richard Eder finds “depressing” and “complacent” (H. L.) Mencken’s note to himself that “there is no other Jew in Baltimore who seems suitable” for the Maryland Club (Book Review, Jan. 14).
As a curmudgeonly Jew, I see the remark as exquisite sarcasm.
