Caltrans’ Great Idea: Freeway Orange Angels
- Share via
I recently viewed what I considered to be a beautiful sight on the freeway. I had the opportunity to witness the Orange Angels in action when they towed a stalled car off the Santa Ana Freeway on Wednesday afternoon. Quickly and professionally, the car was removed so the flow of traffic would not be slowed down too much.
My hat goes off to the Caltrans officials who actually got this project implemented. I think this new towing policy is fantastic, and I believe that most people don’t mind seeing tax dollars used for this project.
I once had the unpleasant experience of my car breaking down on the freeway during rush hour. After pushing the vehicle into the center divider, I sat and waited for help. I sat with my hood up and flashers on for 40 minutes before a tow truck drove by, and I flagged it down. While waiting, I saw five (that’s right, five) CHP cars drive right on by. Public assistance was not part of their job that day, or they all had lunch dates and didn’t want to be late.
The tow truck that did stop was one the CHP calls illegal. These trucks cruise the freeway looking for business, but I am not complaining. At least they helped me.
Let’s hope these Orange Angels are a success and help solve a part of the traffic mess. Great job, Caltrans.
