Long Beach State defeated Cal State Northridge, 6-15, 15-13, 15-10, Saturday for fifth place in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational men’s volleyball tournament.
It was the third match of the day and seventh in two days for Northridge, which earlier defeated UCLA, ranked second in NCAA Division I, and the University of Manitoba, the top-ranked Canadian collegiate team. The Matadors finished the tournament 5-2.
“We played great all weekend,” CSUN Coach John Price said. “It really showed that we’re right there at the top. We can compete with the best teams in the country.”
Three freshmen--Gary Reznick of Taft High, Coley Kyman of Reseda, and Ken Lynch of Crespi--started for Northridge.
