COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Shut Down by Bakersfield

Fresh from a victory over one of best teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., Chapman College fumbled away a chance to defeat another one.

Led by the inside play of Roger Middleton and the outside shooting of Kevin Stafford, the Panthers were down by only two points at the half before Cal State Bakersfield pulled away to win, 80-63. Chapman’s turnovers helped Bakersfield breeze in the second half.

Friday night, when the Panthers (10-9, 2-4) beat Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 86-76, Middleton scored 24 points before fouling out early in the second half.

Saturday, Middleton scored 10 of his team-high 18 points in the first half, but the Roadrunners (17-2, 5-1) kept the ball out of his hands for most of the second half.

Without much inside production from Middleton or Frantz Reyes, who scored seven points before fouling out, Chapman was dependent on its perimeter game. But the Panthers shot only 40% from the field in the second half. Chapman also had 17 turnovers in the game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Southern California College 96, Azusa Pacific 87--John Mounce scored 22 points for host Southern California College (14-7, 4-2).

In Western Christian Athletic Assn. men’s basketball:

Pacific Christian College 114, Pacific Coast Baptist 85--Visiting Pacific Christian College, leading 59-58 early in the second half, scored 17 straight points.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Cal State Fullerton 67, UC Santa Barbara 50--Genia Miller had 24 points to lead Cal State Fullerton (10-9, 5-5) over visiting UC Santa Barbara (9-8, 4-4).

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 14, Loyola Marymount 13 (12 innings)--Mike Giuseffi’s home run in the top of the ninth gave Chapman (1-0) the victory.
