There is a great amount of information in “An Adventure Guide to the South Pacific,” by Thomas H. Booth, even for the most experienced traveler. In addition to Hawaii, Tahiti and Fiji, the book covers the islands of Cook, Tonga, Vanuata and the Solomons. Although some are remote, they offer adventure, beauty and accessibility by major airlines. Information on where to stay and eat, how to get around and what to see and do is detailed (Hunter Publishing: $15.95).
Next time you go to Hawaii, take along a copy of “K-Lyn’s Hawaii Restaurant and Poll Guide,” by Kathy Glick and Lynn Heller. It profiles 224 of the island state’s best places to tuck a napkin. Each is rated for ambience, food and service, the rating based on a survey of more than 5,500 islanders. Information is presented in alphabetical order, with appendixes to help make a choice of cuisine, view, atmosphere and location. Maps, dress codes, costs, entertainment and house specialties are covered in easy-to-read vignettes (K-Lyn: $9.95).
Margaret Zellers’ updated “1990 Caribbean,” an 884-page guide, covers virtually all of the information needed in visiting the more than 30 island groups. Medical facilities, money, politics, hotels and restaurants are included. Travelers will find a detailed selection of elegant villas, along with inexpensive and simply furnished accommodations (Fielding/William Morrow: $14.95).
Despite its title, all vacationers should find the information worthwhile in “Birnbaum’s USA--for Business Travelers.” It lists 44 destinations, with a details on hotels, restaurants and services, as well as sightseeing and special events. The guide is divided into sections that offer information on planning, budgeting and driving routes. Keyed maps pinpoint specific locations and freeway access (Houghton Mifflin: $8.95).
“The Florida Keys--From Key Largo to Key West,” by Joy Williams, offers a plethora of information that might even be helpful to residents there, including the usual where-to-stay-and-what-to-eat information (Random House: $9.95).
