Mostly White Males on Broadcast News: White male reporters dominated the network newscasts in 1989, according to a study released last week by the Washington-based Center for Media and Public Affairs. Women and minorities lagged far behind in the report, which charted race and sex of every reporter on ABC, CBS, NBC evening newscasts for 1989. Only four women were among the 50 reporters who appeared most frequently on nightly news, although three made the top 10--CBS’ Lesley Stahl, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell and CBS’ Rita Braver. Women did fare better as anchors. Seven of the 17 evening news anchors were female, including Connie Chung, Diane Sawyer and Deborah Norville. Of all stories on the news, 91% were filed by whites.
