Yeghishe Derderian; Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem

Yeghishe Derderian, 80, spiritual leader of 8,000 Armenians in Israel, the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Jordan, and one of three custodians of Jerusalem’s holy places. Born in the eastern Turkish city of Van, Derderian moved to Jerusalem in 1922 to study at the St. James Theological Seminary where he later served as dean. The author of 22 biographies and other books, Derderian became deputy patriarch in 1949 and patriarch of Jerusalem in 1960. In Jerusalem on Thursday.
