Jesse C. Carr Jr., 59, who wrote “Murder on the Appalachian Trail” based on the true story of the murder of two Virginia hikers. A Virginia native, Carr was a lumberjack, farmer, file clerk, barber, storekeeper and publisher before he began writing 20 years ago. His other books included “The Second Oldest Profession: An Informal History of Moonshining in America” and “A Star Rising.” In Radford, Va., on Thursday.
