SRINAGAR, India — Authorities imposed an indefinite curfew Friday on Jammu and Kashmir after up to 40 people were killed during demonstrations against New Delhi’s rule of India’s only Muslim-majority state.
The demonstrations, in which hundreds of thousands of people took part, climaxed a week of mounting protests after the lifting of a curfew that had lasted several weeks.
The focus of the demonstrations was the Srinagar office of the U.N. Observer Mission, which monitors the dividing line between the one-third of the Kashmir region administered by Pakistan and the larger part under Indian rule.
