SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS 4-A : Jalewalia Scores 32 to Lead La Quinta, 72-62

After dominating the Garden Grove League for nine years without winning a division championship, La Quinta High School’s girls basketball team has broken through.
Led by Amy Jalewalia and Heather Brannan, the third-seeded Aztecs defeated second-seeded West Torrance, 72-62, before 3,000 at Cal Poly Pomona’s Kellogg Gym Friday night to win the Southern Section 4-A championship.
La Quinta was runner-up in 2-A in 1985.
This year Jalewalia, a senior, decided she wasn’t leaving La Quinta for UCLA without a Southern Section title. And with a little help from her teammates, she got it. La Quinta heads into the Southern State Regionals with a 27-2 record.
Jalewalia connected on 11 of 16 field goals and nine of 14 free throws to finish with 32 points.
Brannan scored 25 points, 10 above her average.
