Shelter for Protection From Malathion to Open

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley directed city officials to open a recreation center in Watts Wednesday night for homeless people seeking shelter during malathion spraying.
Bradley’s action came after a 13-0 City Council vote authorizing a plan to open shelters in areas that are being sprayed to combat the Mediterranean fruit fly.
Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky, who authored the motion, said that opening the centers, administered by the Parks and Recreation Department, was the “logical, simple and inexpensive thing to do.”
Helicopters were due to spray a 48-square-mile area Wednesday night, including Bell, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lynwood, and parts of Athens, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Compton, East Los Angeles, South Gate, Vernon, Walnut Park and Watts.
