Rule to Block Escapes Caused Inmate’s Death

CARSON CITY, Nev. — An inmate killed when he tried to leave the state prison with the garbage was a victim of a policy that requires trucks to drive over refuse once it reaches the dump, a spokesman said Sunday.
“Obviously, we don’t want inmates to escape,” said Nevada State Prison spokesman Glen Whorton. “Anybody who hides himself in the trash is running that kind of risk. It’s one way to protect the public.”
The body of Willis Walton, 26, was discovered at the dump Sunday. He apparently was crushed to death by the truck, authorities said.
Walton was serving a 19-year sentence for burglary and possession of a controlled substance.
