RTD Again Delays Action on Rail Line Security

With five of its 11 members absent, the Southern California Rapid Transit District Board of Directors on Thursday again postponed action on whether to hire sheriff’s deputies, rather than use its own transit police, to protect the new Long Beach-Los Angeles light-rail line.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department said that if a decision is not reached by Tuesday, deputies will not have enough time to adequately prepare for the July 16 opening of the 22-mile Blue Line trolley.
Board members, however, made no commitment to resolve the issue by then.
