A hit-and-run driver led San Diego police on a freeway chase Tuesday that ended when he hit a sign at an exit from Interstate 805, a police spokesman said.

The incident began about 1 p.m at the trolley station on Beyer Boulevard in San Ysidro, said the spokesman, Bill Robinson.

Robinson said a trolley security guard saw a man lying in a car. When the guard got close, the man sat up and sped off.

Robinson said the car, a 1977 Plymouth, drove about 700 feet north and hit the front of another car that was stopped in the 3800 block of Beyer Boulevard. The driver and a passenger in the car were not seriously injured.

A patrol car saw the Plymouth as it was leaving the accident scene and chased it when it entered the freeway. The car came to a stop after it hit a traffic sign at the Palm Avenue exit, Robinson said.

Police arrested Lloyd Nelson Wheeler and booked him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a revoked license, leaving the scene of an accident and felonious evasion of a police officer, Robinson said.

He said that Wheeler was arrested last week for driving under the influence of alcohol and that his license had been revoked after a previous drunk-driving incident. Robinson said that Wheeler is in his late 50s and lives in the 3600 block of Beyer Boulevard.
