Muti Finale in Philadelphia: Riccardo Muti, music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1980, will step down from that post as of August 1992, it was announced Thursday. Muti’s resignation will come after nearly 12 seasons at the helm of the ensemble. When Muti took over in Philadelphia 10 years ago, he was only the third music director to lead the fortunes of the orchestra in seven decades. Between them, Muti’s predecessors, Leopold Stokowski and Eugene Ormandy, had contributed 68 years to the ensemble’s history. Muti said that he is leaving Philadelphia “to pursue personal projects.”
