THE SIDELINES : Lendl Accepts Libel Damages

LONDON — World No. 1 tennis player Ivan Lendl accepted substantial libel damages from a British newspaper today over allegations that he had a secret relationship with former beauty queen Pamella Bordes.
Lendl’s lawyer, Peter Sigler, told a London court that the Czechoslovak tennis star had never even met Bordes, a former Miss India whose exploits have figured in Britain’s scandal-seeking tabloid press for more than a year.
Nicholas Armstrong, lawyer for the tabloid Today, said the newspaper accepts that there was no truth in its allegations of a relationship between Lendl and Bordes. In addition to the undisclosed damages, Today agreed to pay Lendl’s legal costs.
