HOUSTON — Shell Oil Co. introduced a reformulated unleaded premium gasoline today to help reduce pollution in 10 cities, targeting Los Angeles and nine other areas identified as having the worst air quality.
The new product, SU 2000E, is designed to reduce hydrocarbon vapor and carbon monoxide emissions. It is available immediately at Shell stations in Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Washington and Hartford, Conn.
Air-quality models run by an independent research firm show there will be 80 tons fewer emissions released during a typical summer day if all of Shell’s premium customers in the target areas use SU 2000E rather than gasolines blended to current state and federal regulatory levels, said Steven Miller, president of Shell Refining & Marketing Co.
