Library Support

I was very pleased to read your editorial “Libraries on the Chopping Block,” March 16. On behalf of the staff of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, as well as library staffs across the country, thank you for such a wise and farsighted view of the role of libraries in our society.
Recently, Barbara Bush visited the county’s Montebello Community Library to see for herself the impact of literacy programs at the local level. The community access library line, which Mrs. Bush saw in action, is a resource that links up literacy students with community-based literacy agencies. The line was started with federal dollars. The County Public Library maintains the program today.
We at the County Public Library applaud the federal government’s tradition of support for libraries and join with you in encouraging the continuation of that tradition.
