WORLD : 800 Evacuated in Chemical Fire

CHELMSFORD, England — About 800 people were evacuated from their homes today after fire broke out among chemicals including potassium cyanide at a research center, Essex police said.
Four policemen and two civilians were treated by a doctor at the scene but were not hospitalized.
The fire broke out in a workshop at GEC-Marconi Research in Chelmsford, 30 miles northeast of London. The firm does research work on defense contracts. Police said nearly 60 firefighters fought the blaze for two hours. After the fire was put out, the people were allowed to go home.
