Seeded players Carl-Uwe Steeb of West Germany and Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden were ousted on during the first day of the $1-million Monte Carlo Open tennis tournament.
Jonas Svensson of Sweden beat Steeb, the tournament’s 10th-seeded player, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, and Ronald Agenor of Haiti, ranked 45th in the world, beat 15th-seeded Gustafsson, 6-2, 6-2.
Stefan Edberg of Sweden and Boris Becker of West Germany, the Nos. 2 and 3 players in the world, received byes into the second round. and will not play until later this week.
Andre Agassi of the United States was a late withdrawal. He had been seeded No. 3 and was not replaced on the seeding list.
