Rick Osterloh, an All-Southern Section volleyball and basketball player at Harvard High, will attend Stanford next fall and try to make the volleyball team as a walk-on.
He said he will not attempt to play basketball for the Cardinal.
“They weren’t really interested in me for basketball,” Osterloh said. “The volleyball coach (Fred Sturm) said if I tried to play hoops, I couldn’t play volleyball.
“It was a little disappointing that I wasn’t given the chance to play basketball, but I’m still really excited.”
Robert Hillman and Mike Lowe, both Harvard graduates, play volleyball for Stanford. Mark Amstutz, also a Harvard graduate, played for Stanford from 1985-89.
Osterloh, a 1989 Times All-Valley basketball selection, was recruited for volleyball by several Division I schools, including UCLA and UC Santa Barbara.
