COMMUNITY COLLEGE SWIMMING : OCC Women, Golden West Men Capture State Championships

Orange Coast College won its second consecutive women’s title and Golden West won the men’s title at the state swimming championships Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
It was the sixth title in seven years for the OCC women under Coach Don Watson. OCC had 468 points in the three-day meet. Diablo Valley (445) was second and Golden West (284) third.
“The women were just on fire today,” Watson said. “It was a tough meet and a good challenge.”
OCC took control in the 100-yard backstroke. Marana Clark won in 1 minute 2.32 seconds to score 20 team points. OCC also placed seventh (12 points) and ninth (nine points) in the event.
Lisa Hadfield of Golden West won the 100 butterfly in 57.77. She set a national record in the 50 butterfly Friday.
It was the second state title this school year for the Golden West aquatics program and Coach Ken Hamdorf. Golden West won the water polo title in November.
The Golden West men’s team finished with 536 points. Diablo Valley (519 1/2) was second and Orange Coast (473) third. Golden West held only a three-point lead after two days of competition.
Chris Clark of Golden West won the 100 freestyle (45.78) and anchored the 400 freestyle relay that finished second to clinch the title.
Tony Harris of OCC won the 1,650 freestyle in 16:04.76 and teammate Paul Berrera won the 200 butterfly in 1:51.68.
