WORLD : Thousands Fight S. Korea Police

KWANGJU, South Korea — Thousands of South Korean protesters clashed with riot police today after a rally that drew 100,000 to mark the bloody army suppression of a 1980 popular uprising in Kwangju.
The rally itself was peaceful, but students and other protesters in groups ranging up to 10,000 strong confronted police afterward, throwing gasoline bombs and stones.
Pieces of the U.S. flag were scattered through the streets, trampled by protesters and passers-by.
Earlier, people climbed trees and clung to traffic lights, perched on rooftops and crammed atop subway entrances to take part in the demonstrations, the biggest in Kwangju since 1988.
