Volunteers Rescue Penguins Caught in Australia Oil Slick

MELBOURNE, Australia — Volunteers on Friday began rescuing penguins from an oil slick along the southeastern coast of Australia that has already killed more than 100 of the birds.
Fifty-six of the oil-covered penguins, close to death, were being cared for at a special rescue center, said Kris Reinertson, head ranger of the Otway Range National Park.
An investigation was under way to find the ship responsible for the six-mile-long oil slick, which has largely broken up in the heavy seas since it was first sighted Monday, the Port of Melbourne Authority said.
