Commissioner Fay Vincent, addressing a delegation of Associated Press Sports Editors in New York, said he believes most major league baseball players would support a drug-testing program.
“Nobody wants the circumstance to be ignored,” Vincent said. “We’ve talked to the union about the extent of the problem. Nobody knows. But any statement that baseball is free of drugs can’t be supported. I believe there is a problem.”
This contradicts what then-commissioner Peter Ueberroth said four years ago, when he declared that baseball was drug free.
Vincent also said baseball “has a limited appetite for expansion” beyond two National League teams planned for 1993.
