Show Boat (TNT Monday at 11:50 p.m.): This is the glorious 1936 James Whale version starring Irene Dunne and Allan Jones, and featuring Helen Morgan, Paul Robeson, Charles Winninger and Hattie McDaniel. (2:40)
The Ballad of Cable Hogue (WGN Wednesday at 9:30 p.m.): Sam Peckinpah’s wry, warm and funny 1970 death-of-the-Old West fable, centering on Jason Robards coping with the closing of the frontier and shady lady Stella Stevens (at her considerable best). (2:30)
Travelling North (TMC Thursday at 4 p.m.): After 40 years of achievement in British films, Leo McKern returned to his native Australia for the role of a lifetime in this warm, lovely and unpretentious 1986 release. He plays a brilliant, bombastic ex-communist, a hard-driving Melbourne civil engineer who on the day of his retirement takes off with his bride, an elegant divorcee (Julia Blake) to start a new life in a tropical paradise. (1:38)
Kagemusha (Bravo Thursday at 6 p.m., again at 11 p.m.): Akira Kurosawa’s splendid 1980 period epic, unprecedented in the richness and magnitude of its battle scenes, and starring Tatsuya Nakadai in the dual role of a dying lord and the petty thief who is secretly to replace him. (2:39)
