SHORT TAKES : He Put on a Plumb Good Show

NORTH EAST, Pa. — Country-rock star Jerry Jeff Walker sported an “Ollinger’s Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning” T-shirt on stage to acknowledge the plumber who cajoled him to give a concert here.
“I like a man who knows what he wants and goes and gets it,” Walker, who also traded his beige felt cowboy hat for a maroon North East baseball cap, hollered to the screams and shouts of 250 fans who packed his show Tuesday night.
Walker, 48, catapulted to fame in 1968 when he recorded the now-classic “Mr. Bojangles.”
Chuck Ollinger got the idea of a Walker show in this village on the shore of Lake Erie so that he and his buddies could have front-row seats to hear one of their favorite singers.
Ollinger called Walker’s agent and struck a deal that Ollinger would put half the money up front. The amount was not disclosed.
