Unification Dooms East German Lions

EAST BERLIN — An East German circus struggling to survive the advent of capitalism is putting four of its lions to sleep because it cannot afford to feed them, the daily Der Morgen newspaper said Thursday.
Busch, one of three circus companies that lost generous state subsidies after last Sunday’s merger of the two German economies, said it will also have to sell several horses.
“Takings are down, our resources nearly dried up and our subsidies used up,” circus leader Hartmut Schulz said.
“Food costs have become so high that, with a heavy heart, we decided we will have to put four of our lions to sleep.”
