County Surfers Advance at Oceanside Meet

OCEANSIDE — Mike Parsons and Jeff Booth, both of Laguna Beach, were among 32 surfers who advanced to the second round Thursday at the Life’s a Beach surfing competition at the Oceanside Pier.

Also advancing to today’s second round was Shane Beschen of San Clemente, who upset Australia’s Glen Winton. The finals are scheduled for Sunday.

Richie Collins of Newport Beach, seeded ninth, will meet Ted Robinson of Manhattan Beach in the second round. Collins was one of the top 16 seeded surfers who received first-round byes.

Jolene Smith of San Clemente advanced to the first round of the women’s competition. Alisa Schwartzstein of Laguna Beach and San Clemente’s Jorja Smith were eliminated in the trial heats.
