RAIDERS : Alzado Strains a Calf Muscle, Sits Out Part of First Practice

OXNARD — Lyle Alzado’s comeback hit a bit of a snag when he strained his right calf muscle in the Raiders’ first practice at training camp Monday afternoon.
Alzado said he felt a twinge in his right leg during a non-contact drill, so he sat out the rest of the practice as a precaution. The 41-year-old defensive end doubts the injury will deter his bid to make the team after a four-year retirement.
“If I feel something tight it’s silly to really push myself,” Alzado said. “So I just coast through some of it and pace myself in certain situations. In team work I work really hard, and in pass rush I worked hard. But if I’m feeling tight . . . I’m going to back off.
“I’ve got until the end of August to find out whether I’m here or not. One thing I do know, I’ve got my speed and my quickness and my power is better than it was before.”
Meanwhile, the Raiders signed linebacker Aaron Wallace, a second-round pick from Texas A&M;, and Myron Jones, an 11th-round pick from Fresno State. No terms were disclosed, but Wallace’s agent, Tom Condon of Kansas City, said Wallace signed a $1.075-million three-year deal, including a $300,000 signing bonus.
Anthony Smith, the Raiders’ No. 1 selection, is the only draft pick who remains unsigned.
