A veteran Los Angeles police officer was sentenced to two years in state prison Friday after being convicted of burglary and sexual battery of a 14-year-old Hollywood girl.
Stanley Tanabe, 33, was found guilty June 21 of two counts of residential burglary, one count of engaging in lewd and lascivious conduct with a child and one count of sexual battery. Superior Court Judge Michael Hoff on Friday granted a new trial on the lewd conduct charge, Deputy Dist. Atty. Alan Yochelson said.
Prosecutors said Tanabe, a member of the Police Department’s elite Metro Division, demanded to be let into the girl’s home at 3 a.m. Jan. 29, 1989, while off duty but in uniform. Falsely claiming that he wanted to investigate a report of a scream, Tanabe was allowed in by the girl’s parents. He went to the girl’s bedroom and fondled her while pretending to search her, prosecutors said. Tanabe has maintained his innocence.
