Gov. Mario Cuomo said that if George Steinbrenner must sell the New York Yankees, he wants the State of New York to be first in line to buy the team.
“I suspect that it is eminently financeable--for the state and the city,” Cuomo said of buying the Yankees. “You could even sell bonds.”
The governor said to “forget the details,” such as who would run the team or whether voter approval would be needed to sign free agents. Cuomo said a major league baseball team would be a great investment, especially for his cash-strapped state.
The Yankees are worth an estimated $200 million to $250 million.
