A state business leader resigned from the all-white Country Club of Birmingham, and two black leaders called for a protest at another all-white club that will hold the PGA Championship next month.
The resignation by Mike Warren, president of Alabama Gas Corp., came in the midst of a controversy over membership policies at the all-white Shoal Creek Country Club, where the tournament will be held Aug. 9-12.
The founder of Shoal Creek, Hall Thompson, said recently that the club will not be pressured into accepting black members.
