Forest Fires Blazing the Length of Italy

LEGHORN, Italy — Forest fires, fed by wind and months of drought, have scorched tens of thousands of acres across Italy, disrupting train and highway travel and forcing evacuation of hill towns in the path of the flames.
Tuscany and Liguria in north central and eastern Italy were hardest hit, but blazes were also reported in the hills outside small towns near Rome, in the central mountainous Abruzzo region and in the southern region whose principal city is Naples.
Rainfall has been 40% below normal this year, creating tinder-like conditions in the woods.
