The West German Bundestag and the East German Volkskammer meet in their respective capitals Wednesday to consider East German Prime Minister Lothar de Maiziere’s proposal to move up pan-German elections to Oct. 14 from the currently scheduled Dec. 2.
Approval could effectively advance the date of German reunification, although it is still unclear whether the four wartime powers--the United States, the Soviet Union, England and France--could settle such still-sensitive issues as conditions for a united Germany’s NATO membership that fast.
Meanwhile, about 50,000 Berliners are expected to mark the 29th anniversary of the building of the now-defunct Wall on Monday at the first Rolling Stones concert in East Europe.
