Joy Hall’s 1982 documentary, screening as part of the “Native Images” series, tells of the plight of Canadian Indian women who automatically lose their status when they marry non-Indians. Their treatment is so severe that they cannot even stay overnight on a reservation, yet when Indian men marry non-Indians those women receive full Indian status. “Somewhere Between” is unremarkable in style, but it is illuminating, showing how Canada has long pitted the sexes against each other as a way of undermining Indian identity.
