WORLD IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : 150 on Plane From Syria Seek Asylum

More than 150 people who flew to London on an unauthorized flight from Syria have asked for political asylum, officials said. The Egyptian ZAS airline DC-9 carrying 156 passengers, including about 60 children, landed at Gatwick Airport. “They have all asked for asylum and . . . we are speaking to all of them on an individual basis,” a government spokesman said. It was unclear where the asylum-seekers came from, but some press reports speculated they are Kurds from the Persian Gulf region.
