These are the candidates running for three seats on the Villa Park City Council in the Nov. 6 election. Incumbents Robert N. Helton and Wayne W. Silzel did not file for reelection.
Joe Barsa
Age: 57
Occupation: Businessman
Background: Has lived in Villa Park since 1971; was president and CEO of a county-based computer company and of a civil engineering company. Graduated from Pace University in New York. Served as member of Advisory Board at Cal State Los Angeles.
Issues: Wants nominal expansion of existing Civic Center site; wants to maintain semi-rural character of Villa Park and ensure that traffic from Orange goes around, not through, the city.
Bob Bell
Age: 56
Occupation: Real estate broker
Background: Has lived in Villa Park 16 years; charter member of the volunteer fire department. Involved with Orange County Farm Bureau.
Issues: Wants to maintain water quality from Irvine Lake; wants to maintain semi-rural character of Villa Park; advocates thoughtful, efficient fiscal policy.
Barry Denes
Age: 45
Occupation: Sales and marketing executive
Background: Former Marine Corps officer and Vietnam veteran; former high school teacher and corporate executive with Polaroid Corp. and CBS Inc.
Issues: Wants the city to adhere to a more sound fiscal agenda and maintain its semi-rural character.
James T. Fasbender
Age: 45
Occupation: Incumbent; owns an auto repair business in Los Angeles
Background: Has degree in chemical engineering from Montana State University, MBA from Pepperdine University. Has lived in Villa Park for 16 years. Running for a third term, a first in Villa Park.
Issues: Wants to continue the city’s conservative financial policies and maintain the character and quality of the city.
Robert Fauteux
Age: 58
Occupation: Business consultant
Background: BA from Columbia University in Geology, MBA from Harvard Business School. Has lived in Villa Park for eight years. Before that, lived in Stanford, Conn., where he served four years on the City Council. Ex-corporate executive in finance and business planning.
Issues: Wants to deal with traffic overflow from neighboring cities; believes politicians at all levels should be limited to two terms.
Nick Rogers
Age: 54
Occupation: Co-owner of a commercial real estate firm
Background: Has lived in Villa Park for 18 years.
Issues: Opposes move of City Hall to a new site; wants streets and storm drains better maintained; also wants better fiscal planning and noise and traffic abatement efforts.
